Australian Opal Earrings, Blue Opals set in 14k Gold and Sterling Silver, Blue Gemstone Dangle Earrings
Bright blue Australian opal doublets set in 14k gold bezels on textured and oxidized sterling silver with 14k ear wires, (not gold filled wire). These opals measure 15mm by 8mm. The entire earring measures 23mm by 13mm not including the 14k gold ring at the top. These earrings are lightweight and extremely comfortable. Opals are one of the birthstones for October. Doublets are made from natural opals that have had a thicker backing applied for more strength and durability.
Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up trace amounts of silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution sometimes finds its way into cracks and crevices. When most of the water evaporates, the silica remains. If the conditions are just right, an opal is created. The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years and intense pressure to create one opal. Opals are all one of a kind and each has its own beauty. Opals are about 5-6 on the Moh's scale of hardness which is about the same hardness as glass. Care should be taken so they are not scratched. To protect their beauty, they should not be stored in direct sunlight. They should also be removed when showering because they can be affected by chemicals and perfumes like those in soaps and shampoos. With normal care, they will last a lifetime!
