Australian Opal Ring With Peperomia Band, Opal Ring in 14k and sterling silver, Womens Statement Ring
Australian Opal set in 14k yellow gold bezel atop a textured sterling silver band. This beautiful opal measures 14mm long by 7mm wide. The 14k gold bezel is 4mm wide. The interesting texture on the band comes from the peperomia plant. This band was cast (using the lost wax process) from an actual live plant. It has all the wonderful natural texture yet is surprisingly comfortable. This ring is a size 7 and due to the texture of the band, cannot be stretched. I do have other opals that I would be happy to make a custom sized ring with for you with or without this type of band.
Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution finds its way into cracks and crevices. When the water eventually evaporates, only the silica is left and an opal is created when the conditions (and pressure) are just right. This process takes millions of years. Opals are about 5.5 to 6 on the Moh's scale of hardness, which is about the same as glass. Care should be taken when wearing opals to avoid scratching them. It is best to remove them while showering as chemicals and perfume additives can affect them.
Opals are the birthstone for October and are thought to be the most magical of all gemstones. Although there was one book (written in the 1800's by Sir Walter Scott) that said they were unlucky, prior to that, they were considered a sign of love and hope in Ancient Rome. Many cultures have credited opals with supernatural powers, like the ancient Greeks who thought opals gave the owners the gift of health and prophecy.
