Flashy Mexican Cantera Fire Opal set in fancy sterling silver bezel and edged with sterling silver bead wire. This beautiful opal measures about 3/4" by 1/2" or 20mm by 13mm (unset). The band is 2mm sterling silver bead wire. This ring is a size 8 but can be stretched to a 8.5. Cantera Fire Opals are fiery opals that the Mayans and Aztecs used in both beautiful mosaics and religious rituals. They called them “quetzalitzlipyollitli,” or the bird of paradise. Mexican Fire Opals are found in mountainous areas where there are extinct volcanoes. Opal veins exist in cracks and crevices which the miners extract them from.
