Koroit Opal in 14k Gold
Gorgeous Koroit Opal from Australia, set in 14k gold with nice heavy weight 14k half round split shank double band. This amazing opal has flashes of green blue and purple in a caramel background. The opal measures just under 1"long by a bit over 3/8" wide (23mm by 8mm). In its 14k setting, the top of the ring is 1 1/16"
by 3/8" (27mm x 10mm). The band is a split shank band made from 2 pieces of 2mm wide half round 14k wire that I've soldered together in the back and opened up in the front to hold the setting.
Koroit Opals come from South West Queensland, Australia in a remote area that has neither electricity or running water. It is not to be confused with the town of Koroit which is in western Victoria. Koroit Opals are famous for their strong ironstone color with beautiful inclusions of bright colors. Each pattern in the opal is entirely unique and reflects the cutters skill in enticing the best flashy color to emerge from the background.
Opal rates at approximately 5.5-6.5 on the mohs scale which is a similar hardness to glass. It is, therefore very important that you treat your opal very carefully and avoid subjecting it to force or to any other activities that could potentially damage or break it. Opal jewelry should be removed before bathing or showering to avoid subjecting it to chemicals or perfumes which may alter the opalescence. Opal jewelry should also be removed if you are engaging in any strenuous activity like sports (or gardening). In short, a little extra care will go a long way in keeping your opals beautiful!
