Opals occur when water and silica seep into cracks and crevices of trees or stones. When the water evaporates, the remaining silica hardens over thousands of years and beautiful colors emerge. Koroit opals are only found in Western Australia in an area called the Winton Plateau. It is a versatile opal because of the fact that it is mixed it with ironstone, it is more durable than crystal opals or black opals.
Ethiopian opals, as their name suggests, originate in Ethiopia. They were formed high in the mountains as a result of volcanic activity. They are usually found embedded in volcanic ash. Many Ethiopian opals are actually fossilized vegetation.
Opal rates at approx. 5.5-6.5 on the mohs scale which is a similar hardness to glass. It is therefore very important that you treat your opal carefully and avoid subjecting it to force or to any other activities that could potentially damage it. It is also a good idea to avoid contact with soaps, shampoos or perfumes and always store your opal out of direct sunlight.
