Bright blue lapis lazuli scarab cabochon set in an 18 kt gold bezel with eight 18K gold balls surrounding it. The band and back of the bezel are sterling silver. This beautiful scarab has tiny flecks of pyrite which is typical of lapis and adds subtly to its character. The band is 3mm wide and is constructed of half round wire. The scarab itself measures 16mm by 12mm. This ring is a size 7 and can be stretched to an 8.
Lapis is actually an aggregate of several minerals: lazurite, calcite and pyrite. The traditional source of lapis is Afghanistan but it is also mined in Chile and Siberia as well as a few other places around the globe. Lapis has been appreciated for at least 6500 years. It was collected by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, China and Rome. The scarab beetle is symbolic of Khepri, the Egyptian sun deity who represents creation and rebirth. The ancient Egyptians considered scarabs a symbol of good luck.
