Moonstone and Tanzanite Earrings, Gold and Silver Dangle Earrings
Flashy Blue Moonstone Kites set in 14k gold with 3mm faceted tanzanites also set in 14k gold, these earrings were inspired by my love of Art Deco. The moonstones measure 18mm long by 9mm wide. The total size of the earrings (including the silver edge, but not the gold ring) is 21mm long by 12mm wide. The earwire is 14k gold so it is both hypoallergenic and will keep its shape. These earrings are lightweight so they will be comfortable to wear all day.
According to Hindu mythology, Moonstone is composed of solidified moonbeams. As lovely as that sounds, we now know that Moonstone is part of the feldspar group of minerals. When it is forming, orthoclase and albite separate. When light gets in between the two layers, and a phenomena called adularescence occurs. Adularescence is the light that seems to move across a gem. Moonstone is considered by some to bring good luck and also to aid in seeing the future, especially if you hold a moonstone during the full moon.
Tanzanite is a newcomer to the world of gemstones. Blue stones emerging from Tanzania were identified as the mineral zoisite in 1962. In 1967, prospectors located the primary source for this December birthstone: the Merelani Hills. It was named tanzanite in honor of its country of origin. Tanzanite is valued mostly because of its deep and saturated color, which ranges from a pure rich blue to violet, with the blue considered most valuable.
