Peruvian Opal Pendant and Australian Opal Boho Necklace, Gift for Gardeners and Nature Lovers
Peruvian Opal and Australian Opal sterling silver pendant with oxidized fox tail chain. This one of a kind necklace features a gorgeous Peruvian Opal that looks like an underwater snapshot topped with an Australian Opal. To emphasize the natural theme, I've surrounded it with sterling silver twigs cast from actual twigs. The chain had been oxidized to complement the oxidized twig border. It is 18" long (long chains are available, too) and has a lobster claw clasp for security.
Peruvian Opalized Wood is a rare stone that is only found in the Andes mountains near San Patricio. The colors are reminiscent of a Caribbean ocean and commonly has dendrites that add to its "picture" quality. It is the national stone of Peru. It is about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness so care must be taken not to scratch the stone although with normal wear, it will be fine.
Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up trace amounts of silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution sometimes finds its way into cracks and crevices. When the water evaporates, the silica is remains. If the conditions are just right, an opal is created. The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years to create one opal!
