Actual Ammonite fossils cut into a teardrop shape and inlaid with mother of pearl which I've set in sterling silver. I've added a small mother of pearl cabochon as an accent stone. These earrings measure 1" long by 1/2" wide. The mother of pearl cabochon is 3mm.

Ammonites were sea creatures that are related to modern day squids and octopuses. One of the main differences is that they lived inside of a shell. Their shell was made from aragonite which is the same substance that pearls are made of. As they grew larger, they added chambers and the empty chambers helped them float. They were very common during the age of the dinosaur, about 425 million years ago. They died out and became extinct 66 million years ago. This ammonite has been inlaid with mother of pearl. Mother of pearl comes from the inside of the shells of mollusks, such as: oysters, mussels or abalone.
