Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up traces of silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution finds its way into cracks and crevices in trees or boulders. When the water evaporates, the silica is left (with minute amounts of water trapped in the molecules), and an opal is created! The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years. Pink Tourmaline is one of the many colors that the gemstone tourmaline comes in. It is also green, blue, black and watermelon (exhibiting both pink and green in the same crystal). Tourmalines are crystals and their color depends on the trace minerals present-for example, manganese produces the reddish colors while titanium produces the bluer tones. It is birthstone for October and also the gem of the eighth anniversary. It is about 7 -7.5 on the hardness scale.
