Ammonite Fossil Inlaid with Ammolite Sterling Silver Pendant
Incredible, actual fossil called an Ammonite inlaid with Ammolite, set in sterling silver with 3mm faceted amethyst, garnet, emerald and citrines encircling the center. This one of a kind pendant is 40mm from triple loops to bottom edge and 25mm wide. The back of the pendant has an embossed pattern along with my maker's mark.
Ammonites were sea creatures that were related to modern day squids and octopuses. One of the main differences is that they lived inside of a shell. Their shell was made from aragonite which is the same substance that pearls are made of. As they grew larger, they added chambers and the empty chambers helped them float. They were very common during the age of the dinosaur, about 425 million years ago. They died out and became extinct 66 million years ago.
Ammolite is an opal like material found along the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, in Alberta, Canada. It is a very rare substance, as it is unique to only one location worldwide. It is the fossilized and mineralized material formed from Ammonites.
