Aquamarine is named for the Latin phrase, "water of the sea" and is a blue to blue green type of beryl. It was thought to keep sailors safe at sea. It is the birthstone for March. It was also believed to enhance the happiness of marriage, make the wearer more amiable and quicken the intellect. Aquamarines are fairly hard, 7.5 to 8 on the Moh's scale of hardness so they make a good stone to use for a ring. Most aquamarines originate in Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains.
The beautiful grape like color of amethyst led early Greeks to associate amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine. Other legends reflected beliefs that amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick-witted in battle and in business affairs. It was believed that wearing amethyst prevented drunkeness.
Fine amethysts have been set in religious jewelry and royal crown jewels for centuries. It was once considered equal in value to ruby, emerald, and sapphire. It’s no wonder that fine amethyst adorns the fingers of bishops as well as the coronation regalia of British royalty.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and one of the emblems of the twelve apostles. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March.
