Koroit Opalized Wood in 14k Gold Ring
Beautiful, one of a kind Australian Koroit Opal set in 14k yellow gold. This amazing opal measures 18mm by 11mm (3/4" by just under 1/2"). It is easily one of the more beautiful Koroit opals I have ever seen and had the pleasure of working with. The depth of color is hard to capture in a photo, the first and second ones do it the most justice, but really, it is more beautiful in person! I have set it in a wide bezel and finished the setting with a wire border. The 14ky band measures 3mm wide and is a nice substantial weight.
Wood opal is a form of petrified wood which has developed an opalescent sheen or, in this case, where the wood has been completely replaced by opal. This process began when a mixture of water and silica ran down over fallen trees. Over time, the water evaporated, leaving the silica behind (which is what opals are formed from). It is estimated that it takes 5-6 million years to create an opal! Opal rates at approximately 5.5-6.5 on the mohs scale which is a similar hardness to glass. It is, therefore very important that you treat your opal very carefully and avoid subjecting it to or to any other activities that could potentially damage or break it. Avoid soaps, detergents and perfumes as well to be on the safe side!
