An exceptionally beautiful, one of a kind, solid Australian Opal set in a custom made 14k gold setting. This gorgeous and completely natural opal measures 14mm by 9mm. This is a solid opal, not a doublet or triplet but one gorgeous stone cut and polished the way it came out of the earth. The 14k gold bezel is 2mm wide and there is a small border beyond the bezel to both finish the design and offer the stone some protection. The 14k band is 2.5 wide. This ring is a size 6 and can be stretched to a size 6.5. Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution finds its way into cracks and crevices. When the water eventually evaporates, only the silica is left and an opal is created. The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years to create one opal. Opals are all one of a kind and each captures their own beauty. Opals are the birthstone for October and diamonds are the birthstone for April. Opals are about 5.5 to 6 on the Moh's scale of hardness so care should be taken when wearing an opal ring. Avoiding chemicals, direct sunlight and removing while engaging in sports will keep your opal looking beautiful.
