One of a kind scenic Australian Opal set in 14k gold. This beautiful stone measures 16mm long by 8mm wide and is set in a 3mm wide gold bezel. This opal is a solid opal, not a doublet or triplet. Looking closely, it resembles a mountain scene with a bright blue sky. There are tiny green flecks in the brown that add extra sparkle. Truly one of my favorite opals! This ring is a size 6.75 and can be stretched to a 7.25. Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up trace amounts of silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution sometimes finds its way into cracks and crevices. When the water eventually evaporates, only the silica is left and an opal may be created. The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years to create an opal. Opals are all one of a kind and each captures their own beauty. Opals are about 5-6 on the Moh's scale of hardness which is about the same hardness as glass. Care should be taken so they are not scratched and they should be kept out of direct sunlight. They should be removed when showering or washing your hands because they can be affected by chemicals like those in soaps and shampoos.
