Flashy, solid Australian Opal set in all 14k gold with a 14k gold half round band, this beautiful opal measures 8mm by 6mm. The 14k band is 2mm wide which is both dainty and comfortable. This is a simple classic opal ring that is sure to become a family heirloom. This ring is a size 8.5 and due to the dainty band, I'd prefer not to stretch it to a larger size. Opals begin as a mixture of silicon dioxide and water. When fresh water (from rain or streams) runs down over sandstone, it picks up silica from the sandstone. This silica and water solution finds its way into cracks and crevices. When the water eventually evaporates, an opal is created. The process, although seemingly simple, takes millions of years to create one opal. Opals are all one of a kind and each captures their own beauty. Opals are about 5-6 on the Moh's scale of hardness which is about the same hardness as glass. Care should be taken so they are not scratched by accident. To protect their beauty, they should not be stored in direct sunlight and should also be removed when showering because they can be affected by soaps, detergents and other chemicals. Do not wear opals (or any fine jewelry) playing sports, doing gardening or any strenuous activity.
Never put opals in an ultrasonic cleaner! Simply use a jewelry polishing cloth to remove fingerprints.
